Windows 11 can feel sluggish even on decent hardware, especially after a year or two of updates and installed software piling up. Here's what actually makes a difference — no snake oil, no registry cleaners, no paid 'optimisation' tools.
Repair-first note: a slow laptop is rarely a reason to buy new. Most machines we see in Lewes and across Sussex need attention (SSD, clean, or RAM), not a skip. Manufacturing is most of a laptop’s climate cost — keep the chassis you have.
1. Restart it properly
Not sleep, not hibernate — an actual restart. Windows 11 uses a feature called Fast Startup which doesn't fully clear memory when you shut down. Hold Shift and click Restart to do a proper clean restart. If you haven't done this in weeks, it alone might make a noticeable difference.
2. Kill startup bloat
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, click Startup apps, and disable anything you don't need launching automatically. Spotify, OneDrive, Teams, Skype, Adobe Creative Cloud, manufacturer utilities — they all pile up and fight for resources at boot. Be ruthless. You can always open these apps when you need them.
3. Turn off visual effects
Windows 11 has a lot of animations and transparency effects that look nice but cost performance. Search for 'performance' in Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings → Performance Settings → Adjust for best performance. Or pick 'Custom' and keep just 'Smooth edges of screen fonts' and 'Show thumbnails instead of icons'.
4. Free up disk space
If your drive is more than 80% full, Windows starts struggling significantly. Go to Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files and clear everything. Empty the recycle bin. Check your Downloads folder — it's usually full of installers you've already used. Run Storage Sense to automate this.
5. Check for malware
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Quick scan. If it's been a while, do a Full scan. Malware running in the background is one of the most common causes of mysterious slowdowns. Windows Defender is decent — you don't need third-party antivirus.
6. Update everything
Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Let it finish completely, restart, check again. Outdated drivers — especially graphics drivers — can cause serious performance issues. Also update your web browser, which is probably where you spend most of your time.
7. The nuclear option — SSD upgrade
If your laptop has a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD) and it's more than 3 years old, upgrading to an SSD is the single biggest speed improvement possible. It's the difference between waiting 2 minutes to boot and being ready in 15 seconds. Everything feels faster — opening files, launching apps, searching, even just clicking around.
