HP builds good laptops with a few well-known weak points. We see them every week, so we know what fails, why, and how to fix it properly.
Symptoms: Screen wobbles or won't stay open, a gap along the base, a cracked palmrest, a lid that pulls away from the body.
Cause: On many HP Pavilion, Envy and 15-series models the hinge is anchored to thin plastic mounts inside the lid and base. With daily opening and closing, these mounts crack or shear off. The metal hinge is usually fine. The plastic holding it is not.
Our fix: We open the chassis and assess the damage. Where possible we rebuild or reinforce the broken mounts. Where the plastic is beyond saving, we fit a replacement lid, palmrest or hinge set. We also check the display cable for strain, because a damaged hinge often takes it with it. Left alone, it will crack the screen.
Fix it early. A loose hinge is a cheap repair. A cracked screen on top is not.
Symptoms: Loud fan, hot keyboard, sudden slowdowns, random shutdowns, games or video calls that stutter.
Cause: Dust-clogged heatsink fins, dried-out factory thermal paste, and worn fan bearings. HP's slim cooling designs have little spare capacity, so a small blockage causes big temperature spikes.
Our fix: Full strip-down clean of the fan and heatsink, old paste removed, fresh high-quality thermal paste applied, and the fan replaced if it is failing. We then stress-test and log temperatures, so we can show you the before and after.
Symptoms: Charger only works at an angle, "plugged in, not charging", no power at all, charger light flickers.
Cause: The DC jack or USB-C port works loose and cracks its solder joints, or a power-path IC on the logic board has failed. Many shops see "no power" and quote a full motherboard.
Our fix: We test the charger, the cable and the board's power rails with a multimeter first. If it is the port, we desolder and replace it. If it is a power IC, we micro-solder a new one. Only the faulty part is replaced.
Symptoms: Trackpad or base bulging, case lifting, laptop dying at 30-40%, battery draining within minutes, "consider replacing your battery" warnings.
Cause: Aged lithium-ion cells degrade and can swell with gas. A swollen battery can damage the trackpad and chassis, and is a fire risk.
Our fix: If your battery is swelling, stop using and charging it and contact us. We replace it with a quality battery, check the charging circuit so the new one is not damaged by an underlying fault, and recycle the old cell responsibly.
